Schools to stress reading importance
Muskogee Schools will kick off Read Across America month Tuesday with a celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Schools across the district will stage events to highlight the importance of reading.
Irving Elementary will host the Tulsa Opera performance of the Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” at 10 a.m., followed by a performance at Whittier at 1 p.m.
BFSA will sponsor a Seussville Caf of Fine Dining where MPS teachers and administrators, Muskogee High School students and community members will read selections of their favorite novels to students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Students can “order” their selections from a menu served by BFSA 7th and 8th graders who will be decked out in maid costumes and tuxedos donated by ACECO and Crowning Moments.
Anne Henry also will bring over the 1950’s dining car from the Transportation Department where students can be read to in a more intimate atmosphere.
“We have some great people coming to read,” said Suzie Orton, literacy coach at BFSA. “It is so important for children to see that reading is a lifetime joy. Literacy is such a key to success; it’s vital that we reach children at an early age to ensure that success.”
Other district-wide school events include taking the Dr. Seuss reading pledge, art projects based on Cat in the Hat, and dress up days based on Dr. Seuss classics.
